Phthalates, and Bisphenol-A (BPA) are found in plastic water bottles, plastic food wrap, and plastic storage bags. These are known endocrine disruptors with links to reproductive and fertility impairments, cancer, diabetes and obesity. They are ubiquitous in the bodies of adults and newborns alike.
Many of the most commonly used lawn care products are linked with cancer, birth defects, reproductive impairment, liver or kidney damage, neurotoxicity, or disruption of the endocrine system. These compounds are carried into the home on shoes, via pets, and through the air where they contaminate indoor air and surfaces, exposing children at levels ten times higher than pre-application levels. In addition, when children play in the yard they are even more exposed, and they absorb more pesticides per pound of body weight than a grown up. You can read more here.
No one should have to make a choice between a clean home and a healthy family. To avoid health risks and keep your home safer, look for phosphate- and chlorine-free products, avoid fragrances (which are usually derived from those yucky phthalates) and steer clear of petroleum based items. Watch out for di- and triethanolamines ( DEA and TEA) which produce carcinogens that can be absorbed through the skin. Check the EWG Guide to Healthy Cleaning and EPA’s Safer Choice program
